I. Why learn Mandarin Chinese?

1. China is the largest market in the world.

The rapid economic development of China has made this country of 1.5 billion people the largest emerging economy as well as the most rapidly growing market in the world. For both individuals and businesses, knowing the official language of China is a key to success in the global economy.

2. Chinese is the third most commonly used language in Canada, and the second in BC.

In Canada, the number of people claiming Chinese as their mother tongue tripled in the last two decades. Of these almost one million Chinese speakers, one fifth of them speak neither English nor French, the two official languages of Canada. Most of them are new first generation immigrants. A large Chinese speaking community has formed. On the West Coast of Canada, and for most organizations and business, being able to speak Chinese is as important (if not more so) as being able to speak French nationally.

3. Mandarin is a more commonly used language than Cantonese.

Mandarin is the official language of China, Singapore, and Taiwan, while Cantonese is the local dialect of Hong Kong and parts of Gangdong Province in China. Since most of the earlier Chinese immigrants came from Gangdong and Hong Kong, Cantonese used to be the domain dialect speaking in the Chinese community in the Western countries. However, with the rapid development of China and the increase of Chinese immigrants, Mandarin has become the "language to learn" in this century.
